At the age of twelve Ian joined the Sea Cadets intending to go into the Navy as a helecopter pilot when he was older. He spent time at HMS Raleigh and was awarded the Top Cadet award. It was when he was in the cadets at the age of 14 that he began to carry an Organ Donor Card.
